Vangarde Shopping Park’s entire Facilities Management team become Move Mates

A group of move mates volunteers.

Vangarde Shopping Park, home to John Lewis and Marks & Spencer, recently got in touch with Move the Masses to ask how they could get involved with our walking buddy project, Move Mates. Centre Manager Deb O’Donnell saw information about us needing walking buddies on a Facebook feed and wanted to help. She said:

Part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative is to work with local community groups, and we thought this was a perfect opportunity to help the lonely and isolated members of our community.

We feel very passionate about giving something back to the community, the whole facilities management team are getting involved with the potential for other tenants to also sign up. The staff members take part in volunteering as part of their working day, they are keen to help others who need support to prevent social exclusion.

Nobody should feel lonely and if we can make a small difference to someone, that connects us as a team. That is something to be proud of.

All nine staff in their Facilities Management team have now been trained as Move Mates and will soon be out and about in the community walking with people.

Angela, the Community Support Administrator at Vangarde has also become a Volunteer Administrator for us. She will be on hand for Move Mate applicants from other tenants of the Shopping Park, to easily have documents checked ready for the DBS process.

Egg Cameron, Founder of Move the Masses said.

We are delighted to have Vangarde as our first partnership and we would love more local organisations to partner with us. We always have people on our waiting list hoping to have some support to get out walking. Integrating a bit of volunteering into the working day makes people feel good about themselves, it gives people a real sense of purpose and a break from the norm positively impacts productivity too.
