Move Mate Profile: Mary

A photo of one of Move the Masses volunteers with her dog.Meet one of our volunteers. Here she tells us a bit about herself and her experience of being a move mate.

My professional background is in nursing. The majority of my career has been focused on working with communities, young families and individuals in the areas of health promotion and disease/illness prevention. A lot of this work involved engaging with and enabling people to make healthy lifestyle choices. So, when my daughter, Helen, told me about the Move Mates initiative it immediately felt like something I wanted to be involved with.

The monthly meetings and training have been very informative and it’s been great to meet up with the other Move Mates, sharing experiences and thoughts. The session on living with dementia was particularly excellent and the Move the Masses staff have always been available along the way to offer good support.

Over the last 3 months I have had the privilege of walking with a lady who is very bright and articulate with a keen sense of humour and sharp wit, she also has dementia. It really has been a delight to meet up with her and help her mobilise. There has been a lot of laughter, some tears and lots of stories told. I feel that I have learnt a lot. What a gift to be able to spend time with her. The experience has deepened my belief that it’s not about what you can’t do, but about what you can.
