We're looking for a fantastic Communications Officer to join our small and fast-growing charity. You'll be tasked with increasing our reach by creating and scheduling great content to use on our website, in our print materials and on social media, as well as writing and sending press releases.

You should expect a fast-paced environment where you’ll be expected to multi-task and manage your time well, on a daily basis.

The successful candidate will be well organised, have a high standard of written English and creative copy-writing skills. Most importantly, you will be someone who is passionate about physical activity and the health benefits it brings.

We expect you to be able to demonstrate your work on social media and have good experience in using a range of social media platforms. 


The basics

Hours: 22.5 per week to be worked flexibly across 4 or 5 days

Term: Fixed-term contract until 31st March with possibility of permanent position after

Salary: £21,500 - £23,500 dependent on experience

Based: Primarily home-based with occasional meetings/events in York

Your responsibilities 

Creating content suitable for different social media platforms; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube.

Developing a social media plan across all platforms and scheduling content.

Interacting and responding to comments and questions across social media platforms.

Creating copy and content for blogs, web pages, press releases, fundraisers, newsletters and email updates.

Reviewing and updating website content.

This role will include some administrative tasks to support our organisation, including extracting data consent information and communication preferences, and managing groups on MailChimp.

You will work with our CEO and Trustees, having input into our media strategy.

Writing and distributing news releases to local, regional & national press, radio and TV to gain coverage on Move the Masses' services.

Collating content for our general newsletter, volunteer newsletter and supporters newsletter.

Person Specification


  • Minimum age 18 
  • Proven experience creating and scheduling content on a variety of social media platforms
  • Excellent written communication skills 
  • Proactive and dynamic approach to work
  • Fully computer literate, with experience using Google Drive
  • Passionate about physical activity, health and wellbeing
  • Good understanding and willingness to learn about all of Move the Masses projects


  • Basic graphic design skills to create infographics 
  • Experience in editing photographic images and video content
  • Specific experience in the charity sector
